South Carolina law obligates an insurer to handle a claim in good faith. When a carrier delays without justification, undervalues without explanation, or denies benefits that are owed, the policyholder may have a claim beyond the policy itself.

A $3.1 million verdict followed a carrier's refusal to pay benefits when they were due: the insurer denied the entire claim and refused to pay the $100,000 owed to a surviving widower after his wife died of liver failure, on a policy that had been in place for more than 30 years.
